As a young girl, I used to go with my mom and grandmother to about 3 different cemeteries throughout Salt Lake and place flowers on the headstones of uncles, aunts, cousins, grandmas and grandpas. I loved seeing all the beautiful flowers: mums, peonies, roses, lilies. I would walk and see the Veteran's area and I would feel a wonderful sense of pride in what they sacrificed. Then, I would walk over to the area called "Baby Land" and that would always make me sad.
I am 40 years old now and do not visit the cemetery as much but I do still try and go (not every year but every other year) and I still feel the same way as when I was a young girl.
Let's remember what Memorial Day is really about. Yes, it's wonderful to have BBQs, swim, camp, vacation, etc. but we should always remember and honor those that have left us --- all too soon in my opinion.
